What is physical gold and why has it held value for thousands of years?

Physical gold is a real precious metal that people have used as a store of value for thousands of years. Unlike money in an account or a financial product, it is not just a number in a system. Gold is tangible, scarce and widely recognised around the world.

That is why it has kept its exceptional position across different periods, countries and currencies. Currencies change over time, some disappear completely, and the value of money can decrease. Gold, on the other hand, remains an asset people repeatedly return to when they want to store part of their value outside regular money.

Gold is especially interesting because of several key qualities:

  • It is scarce.
    • New gold is created only through mining, and the total supply grows slowly. This limited availability is one of the reasons why gold has been able to hold value over the long term.
  • It is physical.
    • Gold can be held in the form of a bar or a coin. It does not depend only on an app, an exchange or a single service provider.
  • It is widely recognised.
    • Gold has value across the world. People, central banks and financial institutions see it as an asset that can serve as a long-term reserve.
  • It is durable.
    • Gold does not corrode or rust, and when stored properly, it can keep its form and quality for a very long time.

Over the long term, the combination of scarcity, physical form and global recognition is one of the main reasons why gold is used as a store of value. Its market price can still change over time, depending on demand, market sentiment, inflation, interest rates or currency movements. Gold is therefore not a tool for getting rich quickly. It makes the most sense as a long-term part of a reserve and as a way to spread part of your savings outside regular money.

With physical gold, quality, origin and purity also matter. High-quality investment gold should come from trusted manufacturers and meet high standards. That is why, with physical gold, people often look at who produced the bar, what purity it has and whether it will be easy to trade in the future.

At Littlebit, we work with physical gold whose purchase, sale and secure storage are provided by BESSERGOLD Trading s.r.o., the Czech part of the Bessergold group. Bessergold is registered with the Czech Assay Office, has branches in Prague and Ostrava, and operates the Zlatá labuť showroom in the AXA Palace at Na Poříčí 1051/40, Prague 1.

Gold available for physical withdrawal is always provided in the form of bars from the Swiss refinery Argor-Heraeus. This is a manufacturer with a long tradition. Its bars are made in Switzerland, have a purity of 999.9/1000 and are certified. Argor-Heraeus states that its gold exceeds the Good Delivery standard thanks to its so-called “four nines” purity, meaning 999.9 parts of gold out of 1000.

It is also important that the bars come from manufacturers on the Good Delivery list. This is an internationally recognised quality standard for gold traded on the professional market. In practice, this means higher trust in the origin, quality and future tradability of the gold.

Bessergold also guarantees buyback. If a user decides to sell their gold, they can sell it back without any fee. Physical gold from a trusted manufacturer is generally tradable outside Littlebit and Bessergold as well, for example through other gold dealers or jewellers.

At Littlebit, this is how we look at gold: as a physical, high-quality and long-term asset that can help users spread their savings alongside other forms of value.
